Step inside a hive and discover the world of bees

We meet Eric and his sustainable beekeeping project in Collserola. He prefers to call himself an ‘abelleiro’, because his relationship with bees goes well beyond making honey. It is a way of understanding and caring for these insects, their surroundings and everything that happens around the hive.

Wearing protective suits, we approach the hives and look inside. We learn how the colony is organised and what role each bee plays. The visit is hands-on: a way to lose any fear of bees and learn to see them differently. To finish, we taste fruit with freshly harvested honey and make our own candle.

HOW THE VISIT UNFOLDS

Melvida's apiary in Collserola Natural Park
1.

We head out together from Barcelona to Collserola

We gather at the agreed meeting point in Barcelona and travel by private transport to Collserola Natural Park. Eric welcomes us at his apiary. There he shares a few curious facts about the biodiversity of these hills, just minutes from the city.

2.

We suit up and approach the hives

Eric explains how bees live and why they are essential to ecosystems. We go over the safety measures so we can work with confidence. Then we put on our beekeeping suits and learn to prepare the smoker. Once kitted out, we move closer to the hives and watch the bees at work.

3.

Honey tasting and candle workshop

We end the visit with a tasting of seasonal fruit and freshly harvested honey. Then, in a short workshop, each participant makes their own wax candle to take home.

Where your money goes

In many parts of the world, bee populations have halved. Eric works to reverse that in Collserola. He looks after several apiaries spread across the park and harvests only the honey each colony can spare. He also moves some of the colonies according to what is in bloom and where the Asian hornet appears.

Your booking funds this work and the outreach that goes with it: visits, talks in schools and a teaching apiary open to the public.
